5 Speed Gearbox into Bellett

Post by flying »

Hi

I am putting a G180w into my 67 GT and would also like to fit the 5 speed gearbox. The one I have came with the motor so I am assuming its the Close ratio ZZR box. It seems that the overall box dimensions are the same but the remote gear stick is too far forward to fit the original hole in the floor of the GT. Have any of the GT owners with Twin Cams fitted the 5 speed box? One option may be to cut and shut the llinkages to extend them. I am wondering if any remote from Rodeo or Piazza extends past the output shaft as in the originat GT 4 Speed. The Gearbox mounts are wider thats been covered in other threads. I have attached a photo showing both original gox on the right and ZZR Box on left

mate, it should go straight into the original hole in the tunnel.
we've done heaps of gemini and 5 speed or twin cam and 5 speed conversions over the years and it all lines up perfect including the tailshaft length, bellhousing in the tunnel entrance, the lot.
double check it all coz it seriously sounds like something is a-miss.

thats the "short" remote shifter u have there.
mine is the same length as the GT one, in that it extends to the very rear of the box. "isabellgrandtourer"s will be the same too.
u'll need the longer one, which correct me if i'm wrong, is the more common one anyway, so it might not be too hard to locate.

geoff, u would have had to fit the shifter before the box went in as u can't get to the bolts for it once it's in place.
that's why my race car has a removable top/lid on the tunnel....

Brett

The extended remotes are they a closed assembly like the original gt or are they more open like the Piazza shifter as in the picture attached?

The remote on the 5 speed that I have fitted to mine is not enclosed and looks similar to the one you have in picky. Mine I think is from 117. :)

there's both types Flying.
as geoff says, his is the exposed type, but mine is the enclosed type, and both of ours are the longer versions.
i think the exposed ones were and earlier type and the enclosed were the last of them, but that's a bit of a guess from what cars i've seen them come out of.
and not a prob to help out mate.
cheers.

When i fitted Rodeo 5 speed to the white GT, I had to chase down one of those remote shifters of the unenclosed type to swap into it. I seem to recall also there was a spacer fitted over the top of the gear box lever area also which either stayed or was removed....... too long ago now.

also from memory, the gearbox mount has to be moved back on the crossmember by approx 80mm. I slotted the back edge of the crossmember with a cut-off wheel about 1/2" , then inserted a piece of 1/4" steel plate in to it. (with the new holes already drilled) then welded the plate into the cross member.
End result is x member with the steel poking out the back that mount is then bolted to. You need to cut the slot so that the inserted piece is high as possible too.
Since I did this along time ago, please check carefully before you do anything !

I did this same x member mod when I fitted a gemini 5 speed to another Bellett in about 1979.

Glenn we had to move the crossmember back on isabell we used the rear holes in the front to rear in the floor pan. the spacer plate you probably recall is where the shifter goes into the selctors some are too long by around 6/8 mm so the spacer lifts it away.

Yes that's a way to do it but I elected to have x member in stock holes

Ok on spacer too. Thats the reason for sure as spacer is about that thickness.

I found the one i have below. The steel casting is 7mm thick. PLus gaskets makes it about 8mm I'm not sure if this is needed or not for the 117 type remote shifter but at least you know what it looks like !

better memory than mine ! At least i remembered i had one to measure though LOL

>>> check the fitting of the Carbies also on this thing. To keep them close in to the engine (away from master cyl) he's fitted a machined block in between, thinner. Probably suffers from poor low end torque i would think.

[ car is about $22k in Japan]
