I built this car a long time ago and think it might have been the 2nd one converted to DOHC. I saw another (Warren Degnans ??) at a Bellett Nationals just after i built it.

I saw the car in a front yard on the way home from work and enquired about it. It was owned by a young guy who blew up the motor. It had chromed wheels on it at the time. His dad was glad to see it gone from the yard. Since the motor was shot, i found a 1800 DOHC at an engine importer. Craig bought one also at the time.

Again, it was painted at home in original colour and fitted with Gemini SL/E interior. Rear seats were done by removing the trim off the Gemini frame and re-fitting to Bellett frame with a minor mode at each end due to Bellett being narrower.

Engine was pulled down and work done to it by a local who was racing a ZZ/R Gemini at the time. Old carbs were shot so I found some 1/75" ex Torana carbs for it. Those triple carbs and manifold worth a lot of money now i guess !

Thats about it.

Bellett's go quite nicely with a DOHC in them.

This one had the original gearbox as a package with the motor.
The tunnel had to altered to move the handbrake further back.

I have a photo of that cars engine bay with dohc, if i remember correctly is just had a 1800 badge on the roof pillar, looked a real sleeper, had most of the wiring concealed.
Thanks for the photos and stories Glenn, if only we could turn the clock back a few years.
regards Geoff

ah, yes, my car: Geoff, I ran all the wiring outside of the engine bay where possible. You can see the lack of wiring in my cars last picture.

found a few more pictures of my DOHC sedan today when doing some garage cleaning.
I had the original carbs with the engine but it drove poorly. I found some carbs off a GTR Torana look alike and fitted them. 1.75"
The pictures were taken in 1989.

I never had any problems with starting even in the winter.

Of course I put oil in . Every body recommends light machine oil . Drove it for about 1 year ended up putting a battery in the boot to give a extra hit then it started ok . Now it's in storage. Soon as it warms up I will get it out . I drove it to coona nats with my tear drop in tow year before last . Gricey

OK, just a thought because can't think of anything else. I did next to nothing to the carbs. Just cleaned them up and fitted them. Just make linkages etc. It started very quickly, even in winter and only needed a very short warm up.
I'm not a mechanic so can't really offer anything else. But it must be frustrating for sure.
