Holden VY SS Sandman by HBD

Post by dave »

I thought I'd start the ball rolling in the non-Isuzu section here with my only non-Isuzu-related vehicle, my VY SS Sandman (by HBD). I got into a wild argument with someone on the LS1 forum regarding if it was a 'real' Sandman, and here's how I won...

He argued that real Sandmans have that they're a panelvan on the build plate (ignoring of course that they made a Kingswood-based Sandman ute), where as mine says it's a ute.

However, on the HZ Monaro GTS, the car, nor the build plate featured the word "Monaro". The only place the word Monaro was used was in the brochure.

I have a copy of the VY SS Sandman by HBD brochure. It says Sandman there, so it's a Sandman. And that keyboard warrior was never heard of again.

Dragging up an old thread (the oldest, in fact, in this section of the forum), but this had to be shared.

I was on the phone recently with a client who has bought a VU Commodore ute and a HBD Sandman canopy with a view of marrying the two together and making a modern Sandman.

I mentioned that I actually have one, a VY SS, that I bought new; it was a pretty big co-incidence as he could have literally spoke to any one of about 80 people at work who DON'T own modern Sandmans!

Anyway, I sent him some pics; mostly the ones above and he was very thankful; he's been a van enthusiast for a long time.

He's also a Buchanan enthusiast. Some of you guys may remember the Australian sports car brand from the 1950s and 1960s.

He then emailed me a few days late to show me this:

He queried if this was mine... even though he knew I live in Adelaide and this photo is from Philip Island. Turns out he's right!

The VY Sandman has only hit Philip Island once, in 2010. I went with PR91 Brett 65Bellett Gav and some other boys to the Historics and had a ball; have been meaning to get back ever since.

So there you go! Small world!

Cheers,

Dave

Yep, that is amazing! Perhaps he was inspired by your car that day for his project?

Speaking of Shannon's office, I rang to cover my new Wasp on Monday, but you weren't there. I got the fellow at the next desk, needless to say, he was very Wasp-savvy! Cover effected, bundled with Bellett, all good.
He asked if it has the signwriting. Nope, nothing that fancy!..........

Cheers, Matt.

Awesome! Whoever you spoke to has neglected to inform me! If it was Matt (another Matt) who sits on my right, we only crossed paths 1 day this week as we're both part time, plus he had an RDO. If it's Steve, who sits on my left, he has a memory like a sieve!

I will do some investigation!

Glad to find you got a guy who knew what you were talking about; Shannons is a good company and EVERYONE there is a car enthusiast, but many would not have a clue about the Wasp. I can't blame them! Most of the Adelaide guys are across the Bellett/Wasp thing though. I wonder why!

Cheers,

Dave

Mate I reckon it was Steve - thats ringin' a bell. He was real helpful giving me the multi-policy discount by making them renew at the same time, so I only have to pay the top-up until then. :D

No doubt you've got them all clued-up, its nice not to have to spell everything out.

Now I have a choice of 3 Isuzus to drive! 8-)

Cheers mate,
Matt.

Ouch! Smooth, but I don't like it!

The guys who built the Sandman canopy on behalf of HBD re-issued it to fit the VE-shape. It's still the same shape over the top; they've just revised the side to fit the VE profile. Looks pretty killa though!

I saw this one at the All Holden Day earlier this year. Unfortunately it's a V6....
