GT steering wheel removal

Hi good people,

I'm trying to pull the steering wheel off the shaft on the GT. Got as far removing the red apoxy "isuzu dome" (horn button) held in by three spring clips around the sides. Then the centre nut, now exposed, has been loosened using a wheel brace.

After this I've tried pulling or firmly tapping from behind to pull it off the spline.

I know there is reference to it somewhere on B'net but can't seem to locate it.

Can anyone tell me what the next step is, or am I missing something ? From memory, I think need to unscrew black melamime indicator housing. Then locate three nuts on inside of aluminium centre housing ?

loosen the nut so it is flush with the shaft thread, then use a hammer and drift to smack the shaft. while you do this apply pressure in a pulling motion towards the seat. It is better to pull close to the centre so you dont bend the wheel.

and make sure the nut is on a few threads, it hurts when a steering wheel hits you in the face!

Thanks guys. I knew you'de come to the rescue gtorph. Yeah, I know the bit about keeping the nut on so ya don't end up eating the steering wheel. (btw, not the way I lost my front teeth). But do I have to take the indicator cover off, and locate nuts at the back ?? (blonde moment, excuse)

B, Try using the right size wheel puller, I did and it worked wonders!! TOO EASY!!

Just as simple as tapping the nut on the spline gently, and tugging the wheel hard (by hand, don't own many tools), and voila !!!

Reason I did this was the steering wheel was angled to one side whilst driving in a straight line. Very annoying and needed repositioning. This happened after the massive effort we put in last weekend (2ldohc and myself) putting in lower rear springs in the front and giving "blue beastie" new shocks all round.

Beastie now looks mildly dumped but "fooly sick", and has a very different attitude on the road.

The job was epic and ended up longer than all "Ben Hur" movies ever made put together. At times it resembled an archeological dig removing 44 years of crud. 2ldohc, your patience and perseverance are extrordinary !!

A WORD OF WARNING FOR THE UN-KNOWING!!!!

this method of removing a steering wheel is how i do mine as well, but, it ONLY works on an older car (like ours) that have a solid steering shaft.
all cars built in the last 30-odd years have a "collapisable" shaft thats designed to fold up in an accident, and hitting the end of it like this WILL destroy the collapsing section of the shaft.... but u won't know until u drive the car and go to turn the first corner to discover u have zero steering....

Good upon Brett, that is what I was going to add to my comment above, I hit send too early after being interrupted!
That is why I said to use a wheel puller, they are not as expensive as replacing a steering wheel column!!
The wheel puller did the job in my GT very well.

The wheel puller would be the ideal tool to pull the wheel off instead of banging it with a hammer. It's easier and safer to use since you'll not be hitting some internal components within the shaft.

I have come across some nice saas wheels and thought maybe a change at times would be nice when and when it becomes on the road..I have the rx7 boss to suit are the steering columns the same in the car as the gt as these came out of a bellett sedan (will they fit or will I have to play around with the plastic cover or blinkers ..cheers davo

Can a GT steering wheel bolt straight into a 4-door
I tried today but no go because of the steering column trim and the indicator...

The GT steering wheel is about 1 inch thicker than the standard
Would have to move the indicator down the shaft which is no biggie but the shroud definitely won't fit
It looks weird the run the GT wheel with the column and indicator switch exposed so I gave up
Another mystery
Can anyone shed some light?

Depends on what model sedan and what model GT you're trying to mix and match.
They do interchange, but is model specific.
