Looking for info on 1967 Bellett

Post by BellettBoy »

Hi, on my 1967 automatic Bellett it has a Km/h speedo which I thought was strange considering it probably should have a Mp/h unit fitted. It's also got a under bonnet sticker in Japanese whilst most I have seen are in English. Are these items standard for Auto's of this year?

On a seperate note would anyone happen to know what the original colour was based on the paint code?
Thanks in advance, Theo

Wow, excitement. I would say you have a fully imported example. I have one too, a '66 auto. Do you have pics of the whole car for us?
Cheers, Matt.

Interesting, excuse my ignorance but weren’t all Bellett’s fully imported from Japan? It’s got this little plate on the car as well from Willys motors. From what I’ve seen a lot of the square taillight automatics had the under bonnet sticker in Japanese I’m thinking maybe it’s fitted to auto cars for some reason?
Here is a pic of the car I’ve put some photos up before
Cheers

Ok, now I've got you, thanks for the pic.
I'm by no means a Bellett historian, just an observer over the years. The fully imported thing, yes, they were all produced in Japan, but I remember Gary telling me they needed a certain percentage of Australian content, to reduce sales tax or something, so we put in the heaters, carpets and radios here. All autos had these bits, bar the badges. Gary has even met the bloke from Penrith who made carpets for locally sold ones. The dealers also offered "deluxe equipment" where they added carpets, heaters, radios, and badges to manual cars. They didn't get the tinted glass, stainless window trims, padded armrest door pulls, two speed wipers, roof mounted grab handles for three passengers, clock, and heater blower of the genuine deluxe cars.
I've known of some examples that came in with these Japanese character stickers, and km/h Speedos that were said to be imported with no additions here.

But you prompted me to walk out the back to look, and I have 2 autos. One has no tyre sticker, and the other's is painted over, but I can see the Japanese characters showing through! Never noticed this before.

The stock stickers seem to have been added by Brisbane distributors. I have a 66 with one fitted.

.

The km Speedo may have been fitted later too, I know of others that have had them fitted. I have one in my parts box.
Cheers, Matt.

Thanks for the reply this info was exactly what I was after. Very interesting about the local content mine still has the radio, heater and some of the carpet. Looks like all Automatics sold here must have had the Japanese character stickers. Looks like my Km/h Speedo must have been put in at a later date I’ve got a spare mph unit that must have come out of the car.
Thanks for the info very interesting stuff, Cheers
