Don't know, Jim. I had same on my car. Perhaps even the same carbs ? I never thought they were too big though? Seem to run fine and start easily.

By the way, where did you get parts from for reco? what work did you do in it. The early 1800's and other sperhaps had a piston type very hard to find.

Glenn. Local engine builder dewer performance did jhe job I just left it up to him also he supplied the carbs. Problem I have it doesn't swing over fast enough to start so I put a battery in the boot. That fixed it. Gricey

did he up the compression ratio also? Perhaps by fitting other non-Isuzu pistons etc

It might have been.
I don't know the ins and outs of all DOHC variations but they do have pistons very hard to replicate unless you get original parts. If yours were replaced, end rsult may have been higher CR. ON (Dave's) GT the end result of machining the head and new gemini pistons was the CR increased a bit over standard.

there's a VERY strong rumour that an Isuzu-only shed has been invaded by an old-ish school Toyota Corolla...?

It would have to be a pretty special Toyota for that to happen.

I wonder how strong-a rumour that is. or is it just a fact?

Hmm, I'd go a Datto 1600 over a RWD Corolla, but you can't argue for free, can you Brett?

 I hate toyota's but in saying that i had 7 hilux work vehicles the first one was a hand me down that done 700 000 kms before the gearbox gave up and still used as a back up today almost payed for itself :) the other 3 had gearbox probs 2 are still fairly new under 150 000km and 1 we sold at 600 000 with engine problems [this one was a lemon ] We have other brands also they are yet to prove themselves but in the meantime i still continue to hate toyota's  .
I hate there truck products too i have as many hino's as isuzu's and can honestly say they are heaps of crap and cant wait to see the isuzu brand replace them even though one isuzu is/was a lemon but the after sales service from isuzu is awsome ;) i have never had to complain just mention it was not right when it was serviced and it was fixed.

ok... it's fact.
scored a 1 owner full Granny spec KE55 Corolla on tuesday. 181 thou k, all the original books, the lot.
really clean unit that's never been bent and drives beautiful but just needs some TLC.
but the price was the best part... FREE! and then drove it home!
Naomi took one look and claimed it as her's. will become a racer looking clean streeter without too much hassle.
oh and the Gemini i was going to do for her mite end up at a new home now, which I'm not really worried about, coz to get it how we wanted was going to take more time and money than i was prepared to spend on it, whereas the little Rolla will be simple with very little money.
i'll get some pics up soon.

as for me and datsun toyota etc...
i'll go toyota every time. some of those early twin cam Corolla's are awesome! a mate has a genuine TE27 trueno sprinter that's really cool.
datto's just don't do it for me. especially 1600's. they're a yawn.
unless it's a Prince and then i'm drooling! but they're pre datsun nissan anyway and heaps cool too.

congrats on the new toy..ota , i'm a datto man all the way(except for my small isuzu fetish :o )i've had 2 1600's and would dearly love a p510 two door sss.
prince was a company that datsun took over in the late 60's real skylines don't have a datsun or Nissan badge on them.
we had a prince skyline a150 when i was a kid...still want a gtb a200 ;)

Hey CDT - you may end up with another Gem if the price is right. ^

I have had many a Datto - from a Sunny to 180B's bought for a carton of coke (four door and 2 door) - All rally cars of course. They take a beating then ask for more!!

A Prince Skyline GT was a pretty awsome set of wheels in the 60's , the only problem was that there was still alot of anti Japanese sentiment in the 60's and also distrust in the quality of Japanese products. I still wanted one really bad but could not afford one , had to wait 40 years ! Resto has started but I want to finish off the Bellett GT first ... not much left to do on it actually.
Have had many Datsun 1600's - powered by a variety of L series motors from 1600 to 2400 cc. Can only say that I have a lot of repect for their durability and easy interchangeability of parts with the 6 cylinder cars - made life easy, hence much more driving time.Had a 4 door 1600 SSS as well.(bog standard ) Only car that I wish I had not sold was a '69 Datsun 2000 Sports which I restored in the early 90's. Iconic trio - Bellett GT,Prince GT and Datsun 2000 Sports.
