Sadly Davo, we didn't make them eat our dust for very long....head gasket blew 5 laps into qualifying. And after a quick replacement it went again 5 laps into the race.

But whilst the car went, it performed well and as usual punched well above its weight.
For some reason I like this twin shot of a boot faced team pushing me back after the second failure.

Needless to say, we're looking into clever head studs and gaskets. And a way of cooling the head a little more.

Hi Pom,
I'm sure you are all over it, but make sure all your clearances are right. We did have an experience many years ago where the engine builder took a little too much off the face of the head. All was good until we went over 4000RPM, then the pistons lifted the head and the gasket blew. We ended up running two head gaskets to make up the thickness and had many years of trouble free motoring.
Keep the pictures coming too, love seeing 'em and reading all about it too.

Not sure if this helps or is even possible on the SOHC heads, but the GT OHV engine uses a water pipe into the rear of the head, presumably for better water flow and cooling of the alloy head.

I hope you can get it sorted.

In the meantime here's the film of the race. Incidentally the Bellett interest is over after a minute!

Going back to the cooling of the head....Glen, any chance of you (or anyone else) posting a pic of the union/connection of the hose where it joins the back of the head?.......Cheers guys.

Glad you like the pic Rod....you might be wondering about the circles on the tarmac in the foreground...they're the markers for where the drivers would stand before they sprinted across the track to their cars at the start of the famous TT races in the 50s and 60s..

When I started work at Goodwood in the early 80s, the original circles were still visible in the Shell Suregrip surface. The track was resurfaced at the end of the 90s, and everything was repainted as it was 'back in the day'

Mark, I don't have the GT anymore so can't post a detailed picture of the rear of the head and pipe. Somebody else should be able to take a closer picture than this.

This is the OHV motor so may not directly translate to the SOHC head. I have no idea of the water passages in those engines.

The pipe uses Bundy fittings and runs out of a tapped insert in the rear of the head to the inlet manifold. The pipe as then electro plated. You should be able to just observe that in this picture of my previous GT's engine.

Yes, i realise that, but idea is the same. I tried to take a picture of the rear of SOHC head but it's too tight in there to see anything. It does not have the pipe of course so Mark will have the same view as I do anyway. He will need to ascertain the water passages to see whats possible.
In the OHV, that pipe goes to the inlet manifold water passage. Visible in my GT motor above.
By now, i guess he may have sussed it out.

Anyway we're making slow progress, and aim to test in August, with a view to doing one or two races at the end of our season.

that would be right Mark. Looks much like the way the OHV one is done (except for the wheel stud? in there !!)

In the back of my SOHC head there is no pipe. But there is a large recess there, about 45-50mm.
