SUSPENSION;

I was told the car is fitted with optional stage 3 (?) suspension. Car is lowered judging by the space over the front wheels (14 x 5.5" by the way) The rear camber compensator spring is 4 leaves and painted blue. Seems to have 'special' rubbers at the ends also. I thought this blue was boy racer stuff. Maybe or maybe not......

The car is VERY stiff when I try bouncing each corner up and down. A look under the car this morning shows probably why.

Each corner has some pretty thick springs and coloured blue again. Part of the stage 3 kit perhaps? Anybody know? Can't see what shockers are in there yet. Will try to see and also measure spring diameters and try to count the turns later.

Engine:- this morning I found the choke on front carb is always partially on which might explain the slight smoke at idle. Will fix this and check it out again later also.

Lot's of things to do ! I pulled the boot lid off and started to repair the damage which has been caused by something strapped across the whole back of the car, on the boot lid. Bonnet may have had the same treatment too but damage is much less. Thank goodness.

It's a great read, and beaut that your mates have been able to help fathom things. Just on that, with the air cleaner, My Crown S has a similar set up from a Corona 1600s. They were hard to find years ago, so I took an old one into Autopro and they sent it to UniFilter. They made an oiled foam 2 layer element with an expanded mesh support. With the original lid it looked & sounded right. They are a finer filter than paper, so do a better job. Perhaps they could make one if you supplied dimensions? Theres a cost, but they last for many years, just wash-out & re-oil.

Congratulations on going out on a limb to have something unique. you are obviously enjoying that now.
Please trailer it to the nats if you are able. There'll be a swarm of interest!!

Very interesting set up there Glenn, That main leaf in transverse spring looks to very thick, My GT has got a three leaf spring, nothing special with coils, thought I would do he right thing and fit new shocks only to find the first one removed was adjustable Koni, puy it back in and left the rest alone. car is real nice on road.

I bought a Datsun 180b SSS ? filter element. Its fits in side but is shorter and taller by 10mm which is main issue. I have a cunning plan though which might work. ince i also have a couple of spare filter boxes, I am planning to cut and shut 2 of them so i get an extra 10mm in height.

I don't think i will bring the car though. I am a bit adverse to towing a car trailer long distances at present. I will think it over though.

The main leaf is 7.2mm thick near the end. This Sport is going to ride pretty hard i think but maybe go around coners ok ?

i had one of those done by Lovell Springs in Sydney which is a reducing 4 leaf setup and they also did me up a 24mm front sway bar.
still got the rear leaf but lost the sway bar somewhere over the years.
Reckon you have the making of a real good hill climber there :0

she certainly feels firm and not much movement. Be interesting to see how she is on the road and a hill climb did cross my mind. There was one last week here for people who had never tried it before with a 1 day CAMS licence issued on the day.

The paint on the car is 2 pak. Fairly old at that and in need of a good polish. A few chips etc too. Not a great paint job though, done with windows in, so overspray on rubbers.....

Finally got under the car to see what horrors may lie there. Surprising little actually. I have a 'pit' in my shed so it's relatively easy to get under the car for a better look, and to work on it. Car has been lifted on a forklift........crushed the pipe from the engine back. Centre and rear mufflers appear to be original types and in good condition it seems. Maybe replaced at some stage.

Left sill is not so great and door has bubbles in it. Right sill has some small rust visible. Right rear jacking pint box rusted through. Some of the underbody gunk has lifted in places.

Some oil leaks at rear of gear box too. Diff also.

Under the RH guard I was thinking might be bad because of the battery area rust but on the face of it, seems ok.

Luckily there is minimal other damage under the car from this stupidity.

After some difficulty getting the pipe out of the muffler end, I removed the damaged piece and had a new pipe bent to suit. Prices seem to have risen since my last Bellett exhaust. $25 for this short piece with 2 bends.
Because this pipe is normally welded to the end of the engine pipes, I have had to alter that end and fit an oval 2 bolt joiner in there. The two mufflers appear to be ok and usable for now. Later I will look at replacing them.

Once exhasut is done i will look at the rusted sills.

Met a bloke at the euora show and shine . He imports a lot of cars from Japan . He refuses to put cars in a container only does roll on roll off . No damage and a lot cheeper . Said he has never had a problem . Gricey

YEA I REMEMBER 4 YRS AGO BUYING A DAMAGED X TRAIL AT FOWLES AUCTIONS IN BRISSIE PAID FOR THE CAR WENT TO THE CAR PEN AND WASNT ALLOWED IN ALL FENCED OFF ...I HAD A TRUCK ORGANIZED AND LUCKILY THE CAR WAS CLOSE TO THE GATE FRED COMES FROM NOWHERE WITH HIS TONKA FORK LIFT WITH A DAMAGED CAE SWINGING ON IT AND DUMPS IT ON ANOTHER TOW TRUCK MY TURN NEXT ...OH NO ..AFTER A DISCUSSION ..HEATED AND HAVING TO PUT ON A SAFETY PLASIC JACKET (REAL SAFE) I WAS ABLE TO PUCH THE CARCLOSE ENOUGH TO THE TRUCK TO WINCH IT UP ,,CONSEUENTLY NO UNDER CARRAIGE DAMAGE ..TONKA WASNT HAPPY BUT OFF HE WENT PICKING UP ANOTHER CAR SQUASHING THE FUEL TANK -FUEL LINES .EXAUST .....HEY HEY COULDNT CARE LESS THE CARS DAMAGED ANYWAY ...YEA ..BUT BOT UNDERNEATH ..ITS A HARD ONE ...GUESS TO THEM THEY ARE JUST CARS TO BE MOVED TO EMPTY THE CARD FOR THE NEXT LOT ....SO GLENN I SYPATHISE THEN AGAIN THEY DIDNT SQAUSH THE TANK ? The unfortunate part of that story Dave is it would have been forked at lest 4 time before you bid on it. They fork them off the tow trucks when they arrive then rack them and every time it moves from there it's forked. not only fowles

update on springs:- the fronts are 15.5mm diameter. What is std. ?

Hope you guys don't mind all these photo updates....

I investigated the left sill rust yesterday....worse than i thought. It's had a piece of metal poorly inserted in the centre. I decided to remove the lh guard also as inspection behind showed a 'hole' in the front section. Not uncommon as we know. So, door off and then the guard. I used to take the dors off using an impact wrench but no luck on this car. Oz suggested a rattle gun so bought a cheapy ($45) and the bolts came out in no time flat. The right side appears to have very minor issues. (we will see)

At the top of the A pillar a small hole and that was repaired buy cutting out and fitting new metal. The sill was 'emptied' of all the crap resulting in about a cup full of rust particles. A new section has been rolled and bent at home to be fitted into the bad section. I have a 900mm wide folder and the curve was done using multiple small bends. A skim of filler will be need though. Not decided where i will join to the old sill yet. If the inside door sill (flat area) is ok, i might join along the small outside vertical 'flat' section of the sill. About 3/4 of the sill to be replaced. Rear seems fine.

The guard needs some metal replaced also on the flange that bolts to the body. Seems to me that the water protection in this area of a Bellett is sadly lacking. Late model cars have an insert behind the wheel to stop this splashing into this area.

afraid there is no way the Sport will make it to Nats now.

In case you are wondering what that grill is in the floor. I built an "L" shaped pit into the floor of the shed, before i built the shed. It's 6 feet long under the car and what you see is the access area to climb down into it. Its 6' deep too.
